It seems their chemistry and their son Lil B has kept them together.
Saigon was born Brian Daniel Carenard in Spring Valley, NY. His family moved to Brooklyn when he was 7. But his life was surrounded by negative influences and his impoverished neighborhood induced him into crime. He was a violent teenager who had no trouble throwing down to defend himself in the streets. Saigon carried a strong and intimidating demeanor to protect himself but it warranted people trying to test him constantly. When he was 20 years old Saigon was in the middle of an altercation at a Bar. He pulled out his gun and fired at someone. Saigon and his crew tried to flee while the police were called to the scene by bar patrons. He later turned himself in and was sentenced to 4 years in prison. But the jail sentence would be the turning point in his life.
While locked up Saigon met a fellow inmate named Hakim who served his time in lock up rapping. Saigon joined him in battle raps which became a daily tradition for the two in the yard. From reading a book by Wallace Terry, an African American journalist he came up with the name Saigon. The book was about Wallace’s experience speaking to American soldiers in the Vietnam War. Saigon is the capitol of Vietnam where one of the battles during the war were fought. On 30 April 1975, Saigon fell and the war ended with a Communist victory. In 1976 Saigon was later named Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2000 Saigon was release from prison when he was 24 years old. He began recording demos and mixtapes. Just 4 years later with a lot of street hustle he signed his first major record deal with Atlantic Records. The deal was encouraged by producer Jus Blaze who was set to Executive Produce Saigon’s album on the label. Unfortunately the album was shelved after Saigon and Blaze recorded over 35 tracks. The label wasn’t happy with the direction his music was going and demanded he record more mainstream music with less message and more twerk. Just a year later Saigon hired a lawyer to release him from his contract. It was all hustle and no play from that point on.
Saigon continued recording underground music with producer Jus Blaze. He rose to fame with a recurring role on HBO’s Entourage. His mixtapes received a lot of buzz from music critics and journalist who gave his music high reviews. Despite the recognition Saigon struggled to get anything on the radio.
